The Cthulhu Spawn Escape
[August Derleth's Cthulhu Mythos]
One of these resurgences was by the spawn of Cthulhu, who long ago briefly succeeded in escaping from their captivity:
There was a time, the monk told, when the accursed children of one such Evil
One [Cthulhu] had escaped their prison, had been called back to earth by the power of
those black souls who still worshipped them, spawn of mad Cthulhu . . . [Depths]
It was as if the
creatures threw about them a spell under which all men fell, and there was none
able to resist. And yet the things had been vanquished at last, by a power from
the Elder Gods wielded in the hands of men. . . . he told how holy men from the interior of Europe
had driven these evil genii into the waters of the earth. The holy men had used
the forces of the Elder Gods, the power of the Ancient Ones [Elder Gods (1)], which they had
come upon in some manner. [Depths]
