Resurgences of the Great Old Ones
[August Derleth's Cthulhu Mythos]

The Great Old Ones (3) frequently break forth from their imprisonment:

These other beings [Great Old Ones (3)], despite being expelled and sealed away by fearful and hated seals, continue to live on “outside” and are frequently manifest in attempts to regain their control over and possession of earth and the “inferior” beings who now inhabit it . . . [Lurker]

. . . old gods of ancient good, and forces of ancient evil, of whom the latter were now in leash, and yet ever breaking forth, becoming manifest briefly, horribly, to the world of men. [Beyond2]

When the Great Old Ones (3) have broken free, they have been stopped either by the Elder Gods (1), by humans, or by other non-human beings.

. . . from time to time the Old Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] had made a resurgence toward power, sometimes to be stopped by direct interference by the Elder Gods, but more often by the agency of human or non-human beings serving to bring about a conflict among the beings of the elements, for, as Gardner’s notes indicated, the evil Old Ones were elemental forces. [Dweller]

Since this initial rebellion . . . the Great Old Ones had continually sought to regain their power to war against the Elder Gods, and there have grown up on earth and other planets certain cultists and followers—like the Abominable Snowmen [Outer Ones], the Dholes, the Deep Ones, and many others, all dedicated to serve the Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)], and often succeeding in removing the Elder Seal to free the forces of ancient evil, which had then to be put down again either by direct intervention of the Elder Gods or by the alert watchfulness of human beings armed against them. [Valley]

These resurgences have left repressed memories in humanity:

And every time there had been a resurgence, the mark of it had been left deep upon man’s memory—though every attempt was made to eliminate the evidence and quiet survivors. [Dweller]
