Intent to Escape
[August Derleth's Cthulhu Mythos]
The Great Old Ones (3) still hope to escape from their imprisonment and regain control of the earth and the universe:
. . . those who dared set themselves
against the Elder Gods who ruled from Betelgeuse, those who warred upon the
Elder Gods, the Great Old Ones led by the blind idiot god, Azathoth, and
Yog-Sothoth, who is All-in-One and One-In-All, and upon whom are no strictures
of time or space, and whose agents are ’Umr At-Tawil and the Ancient Ones, who
dream forever of that time when once again they shall rule, to whom rightfully
belong Earth and the entire universe of which it is a part . . . [Curwen]
. . . the Great Old Ones . . . the evil beings who sought always
to triumph once more over the Elder Gods, who had shut them out or imprisoned
them . . . [Dweller]
. . . from which they hoped to rise once more against the Elder Gods . . . [Hastur]
. . . the Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] . . . all dreaming
in hidden places of the time when they can rise again against the Elder Gods
and once more rule and command Earth and the sister planets and stars of the
universe of which Earth is but an infinitesimal part. [Keeper]
. . . the hidden places in the cosmos where the
Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] still lurk, waiting forever to return to the paradise from which
they were cast out eons ago. [Keeper]
. . . Lloigor and Zhar, ancient evil ones, and
their minions await the day when they can once more sweep over the earth to
bring death and destruction and incredible age-old evil! [Lair]
The Great Old Ones . . . represented an ever-present menace to mankind
and indeed to all the creatures on earth, to which their incessant strivings to
come through again were aided by their primitive worshippers and followers . . . [Lurker]
. . . the rebellious Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] . . . all of whom had been vanquished and exiled to outer spaces
against the coming of another day in far time yet to come, when they could rise
with their followers and once again vanquish the races of mankind and challenge
the Elder Gods . . . [Seal]
. . . none knows where he [Cthulhu] lies dreaming
against the time of his coming again. [Seal]
. . . Cthulhu had been banished, dead and yet not dead . . . waiting, biding his time to rise and rebel again, to strike once more for
dominion against the rule of the Elder Gods, for a world and universes of his
own persuasion . . . [Seal]
. . . the Great Old
Ones . . . it is their evil
intention to come again and rule the universe as once they did after their
breaking away and escape from the domain of the Ancient Ones [Elder Gods (1)]. [Sky]
Since this initial rebellion . . . the Great Old Ones had continually sought to regain
their power to war against the Elder Gods . . . [Valley]
The Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] . . . hope to return and once more tempt the wrath of the Elder Gods. [Whippoorwills]
. . . I knew these for the Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] thrust forth by the Elder
Gods and waiting now at the Gate to be summoned to their abode on earth as once
in aeons past . . . [Whippoorwills]
The
book evidently concerned ancient, alien races, invaders of earth, great
mythical beings called Ancient Ones [Great Old Ones (3)] . . . all involved in some kind of plan to dominate earth and served by
some of its peoples . . . [Witches]
It was one of the Great Old Ones, who were believed to be reaching from other dimensions and far stars, as well
as from the sea’s depths and pockets in space for re-establishment of their ancient dominion over earth. [Wood]
