Earth Elementals
1. Gnomes
A class of beings who are associated with the Earth element in European occult works. See: gnomes.
2. Earth Beings, of the Great Old Ones (3)
In Derleth stories, the Earth beings are a subgroup of the Great Old Ones (3) that are associated with the Earth element.
They are said to be "horrible animate survivals of distant eons."[4]
The Earth beings are as follows:
- Nyarlathotep[1][2][3], also known as Earth Creature[3]. In assigning Nyarlathotep to the Earth, Derleth may have been inspired by Lovecraft's description of Nyarlathotep as residing in "grinning caverns of the earth's centre" [HPL Rats (online text)]. Lovecraft's prose poem Nyarlathotep (online text) also associates him with subterranean places, for one of the columns of hypnotized people files into a subway entrance, and another descends into a gulf in a snowy landscape where the narrator has his epiphany of Nyarlathotep.
- Shub-Niggurath[1][2]
- Yog-Sothoth[2]
The amorphous spawn who serve Nyarlathotep and Shub-Niggurath are also associated with Earth.[1]
The Earth beings are rivals and oponents of the Fire Beings (Cthugha and his Flame Creatures).[2][4]
